You have seen the power of the internet, and because of that you now want to start an online business in the UK. “But I have a day job,” you say. Is it possible to be working on your day job alongside working on your business?
Certainly. In fact, it’s a good thing to start an online business in the UK on the side while you’re still employed. More so if you’re still single and still relatively new in your career. At this point, you have less to think about, and more time to do the things you want to do. Why not include “run my own business” as part of your bucket list?
With that, here are five handy tips to keep in mind when you decide to start a business while working a day job.
1. Don’t quit your day job!
Some advice we hear or read about would tell you to jump ship as the first step. They say to quit your day job and focus all of your time and effort to start an online business in the UK.
Big, big mistake.
Why? Because your day job is your safety net. It gives you the money you need to feed yourself, pay the bills, and get you moving every day. Without that steady source of income, how do you expect to live? You haven’t even made the first sale in your business yet!
Don’t ever make the mistake of quitting your day job first and foremost. Even if you have a sizeable savings account, don’t do it. That money can, and will, run out soon enough. It’s always good to have a secure primary source of income.
And don’t pull in all of the negativity either. Stay positive about your day job. Motivate yourself with what you like about it. Keep liking the things and the people that make you happy about your day job. See the good things in life, as with anything. Negativity will only pull you down, and that will surely affect the business you’re building as well.
2. Learn as much as you can
Whether you know a lot about the field of business you’re entering or not, it’s very important to study it and learn it as much as you can. With the pace at which information flows these days, you never know when the latest developments will come in. If you want to start an online business in the UK, educate yourself first. Know the latest trends in your chosen field, best business practises, marketing tactics, client feedback, etc. Find your niche and where you think your online business will be most suited. In short, do your homework. Diligence goes a long way.
Also, do yourself a favour and learn about yourself as well. Evaluate your skills and talents. Know what you’re good at, and the things you like doing the most. Knowing your own personality, psychology, and background will help a lot in planning on what business is suited to you. As the old saying goes, “know thyself”.
3. Set daily goals
No one can succeed if they don’t set any goals for themselves. It’s good to have an idea of what you want to achieve every single day. This is especially true if you’re a budding business. When you start your online business in the UK, set daily goals for it. It gives you a sort of map to where you want to be, and which paths to take along the way.
Not only that. Goals also give you a reason to do something each day, and they also give you a sense of achievement at the end of the day. Don’t you just love the feeling of ticking off something at the end of the day?
Of course, to achieve that, your goals must be specific, measurable, and doable. If you yourself can’t tell what you want to achieve with one goal or two, then how can you reach them in the first place? You don’t want a map that will get you stuck in the middle of the journey, so make sure you set goals the smart way.
4. Be committed
You will set those goals for a reason. If you aren’t willing to do what it takes to achieve them anyway, then why bother setting goals in the first place? If you decide to start an online business in the UK, don’t treat it as just a hobby. Treat it seriously, as if your future depends on it!
And that probably means sacrificing a few nights out and weekends off. But it’s not to say deprive yourself of rest and leisure. Of course, having fun and taking some time off every now and then is important for a balanced lifestyle. Just don’t be addicted to them, because that’s what is called laziness.
5. Test it out first!
Of course, you don’t want to end up wasting thousands of pounds on something that doesn’t sell well. Or worse, on something that doesn’t sell at all. Even if you take as much pride as humanly possible on your product, it won’t mean a thing if customers don’t want to buy it.
With that in mind, it’s best to test out your product first. Conduct surveys or interviews with potential customers, for example. Find out if they feel the need for such a product, or if they want it enough to spend their money for it. You may also design prototypes to show to potential customers. Let them play around with it, and see how they respond to it. Does it fascinate them? Does it make them further curious? Is it enough for them to look forward to the final product?
Remember, in business, the customer is king. You will owe your success to them, so make sure that your product will satisfy their needs above anything else.
It’s always a challenge to start an online business in the UK, let alone to build a successful one. But it’s very possible if you are willing to take the steps necessary to succeed.
It’s just like climbing a mountain. Going uphill is exhausting, especially in the steeper parts of the mountain. Once you get to the peak, though, all of the effort you exerted will have paid off immensely!
