So You Want To Start Your Own Business?

So You Want To Start Your Own Business?

So you have decided to start your very own small business. Excellent decision! This is the first step to your financial freedom. Doesn’t everyone want that in life?

But you may want to know more first before starting out. That’s another good thing because knowledge is power. Knowing what to do beforehand gives you the power to do it the right way.

start your own online business

I’ve laid out a few things you need to know before starting your own small business.

The Why

It’s Monday. You wake up to your 6am alarm, and get yourself ready for the day’s work. Take a shower, eat breakfast, get dressed, walk out the door, get on the tube, enter the office, take your seat, and get to work. That’s the usual daily routine. The thought of starting a small business in the UK has never crossed your mind. Of course not, since you have lots of work to do.

We do the things we do for a reason. If you’re looking for exactly that, this is where to start. Read this article to find your why.

The What

What are you good at?
In other words, what are your skills? What sort of education do you have? What do you already have on you that you can use to make money? Let me give you some simple examples.

starting an online business

Let’s say you’re a good artist. That’s a skill. It’s something you can monetise. With that, you could set yourself up as a graphic designer. You could make logos for a price. You could make prints and sell them. You could also make shirt designs and sell them. It’s up to you.

Once you’ve found your why, the next question is “what”. What kind of a business should you start? Read this one to know more about finding the right business for you.

The How

Having the right attitudes is everything in business.
When you want to start your own UK small business, keep this in mind. How you think is as important as what you do. When thought and action align, you are on the path to success. And because it’s only you who can make your business succeed, it’s all the more important.

Now that you’ve identified the why and the what, now comes the “how”. How should you run the business? No, I’m not talking about strategies yet. That comes later.

It all starts in the mind. How, in terms of mindset, should you approach doing business? Read this one to find out.

It’s Crunch Time: How To Stop Being Overwhelmed?

I was chatting with an old, well not that old actually, friend a few days ago.

She was telling me how she was struggling to keep focused on her tasks with so many other distractions in her schedule, kids squealing around her, her partner getting grumpy (‘you never have time for me’), she can’t concentrate and get things done.

crunch time

‘Stop!’ I said

Get a grip girl! Clearly not the right thing to say to a woman – especially coming from a man. She looked at me through those evil squinty eyes, you know that look – right, but before I turned to stone I said…

‘Look, cut down the time you’re working on your business and get more focussed – crunch your time – all of it!’

As she sipped her G&T she whispered ‘crunch it – FFS’

‘Yes, crunch it’

I went on to explain crunching time. Or It’s crunch time!

Take a piece of work or task, or pretty much anything you have to do and do ONLY that one thing / task. So, let’s say you have to spend some time with you kids, helping them study, then just do that – and only that! Your kids will love you for it as they get your undivided attention, your other half will love it as they get some ‘me time’. Win – win -win.

Here’s the thing – you have to have rules!

You and they have to commit to this new way of being… as much as is possible, in these crunch times that you set.

crunching time

The rules –

1 – Focus only on that one task no distractions

2 – No one is allowed to interrupt during the crunch session – it breaks the momentum and impacts on the output.

3 – Crunch time is only 40 minutes

4 – When it’s over it’s done

5 – Take a break (10 minutes should do it)

6 – Move to the next crunch or free time

She looked up from her now half full G&T and smiled.

‘That just might work’, she said.

‘There’s no might’ I replied – and I’ll have what your drinking – thanks.

Turning Committed Ideas into a Business | Small Business Idea

Turning Committed Ideas into a Business | Small Business Idea

You’ll recall no doubt that we left this subject with you having identified those ideas on your list that you had said you would be committed to if you were able to start a home-based business in any / all of them. So what’s next for your small business idea?

Let’s put them all in the order in which you personally would love to have a business in that area; ignore cost issues, for now, just put them in the order your most committed to.

small business idea

Right – done that?

When you have, let go back to that startup cost question and close that off.

Look at your list, which of the small business ideas will require equipment that you don’t have or can’t reuse in order to get started? Look at those business ideas, ask yourself what can I do in the small business idea (market) that doesn’t involve all the equipment?

Is it possible I could outsource some of the tasks of the business to other people and allow me to start the business? Can I scale up (start small and grow)?

ideas into business

Just asking these questions, especially if your number one chose is on this list, will make you start to be creative in how you look at the business ideas, the more excited (committed) to a business the more creative you’ll be to find ways and to stay in business.

When you have done this and there is really no other way to start any of the home based business ideas, just strike it through. And forget about it. If you have strong pangs of disappointment over any you have removed, go back to it and ask yourself the questions above again.

Okay we’re done! Well, alright no we’re not, but we do now have the list of business ideas that we can consider as our home based business.

Next time we cover this topic we’ll look at which of those ideas have a real market and which ones don’t. That’ll be next week (not Sunday), so watch for next article.

Laser Focus Your Success

Laser Focus Your Success | Small Business Tips | Work From Home

Did you know there aren’t actually 24 hours in a day?

Okay, well, of course, there are, at least on a regular clock. But what I really mean is, you don’t get to use all 24 hours in a productive way that you may like.

Take me for example, if someone could invent a pill that would allow my body to recover from the day’s activities instead of having to go into a semi-conscious coma for 8 hours in every 24, I’d be at the front of the queue.

laser focus

Laser Focus!

I am willing to wager, there’ll be readers of this article agreeing with me. If you are one of those great! It means we are aligned and we share similar values for success and security.

Well anyway back to the subject in hand, 24 hours, right.

Here’s the thing – each day has a finite number of hours and minutes.  And how you spend your time will decide whether or not you achieve your goals.

What’s really bad is – when it’s gone, it’s gone! You will NEVER get that time back. You can’t pop down to the time bank and ask for a time overdraft or a loan.

Nope, when you use your time you only get to use it once.

laser focus your success

Here’s the good news though! We live in an age where we can use technology to create multiple opportunities to create wealth for ourselves even while we sleep!

If you do the work to create great popular and in-demand products and services and set up the right technology to support and service your clients, you will get your future time back – in abundance!

But you have to do the work first and what better time to start than now?

Practice that focus, you can start here.

So make your goals more important than other ‘things’, focus on productive tasks that drive your business idea forward, get laser focussed on your business goals, avoid unproductive interruptions, remember the ding of the email and instant message chats?

Turn off the TV (moving wallpaper as I call it), get your partner to sort your kids out (if you have any), lock yourself in the study, or your office or your bedroom – wherever you need to be to get laser focussed time.

AND get on with building your independent future. Do it now do it today, because your future self and your future family will thank you for it!

Until next time, have a great day!

P.S. Practice that focus, you can start here.

60 Day Challenge using the Online Marketing Classroom Coaching and Tuition

Happy Sunday everyone,

We are now almost halfway, 28 days to be precise, into the 60 Day Challenge using the Online Marketing Classroom coaching and tuition.

the 60-day challenge

If this is your first view of the diary of Mind Your Own Business I recommend you go back over the earlier emails in this series to follow the progress thus far.

We now have our shop live on the shopify platform and our FB business page set up to start creating content, run ads and drive traffic.

You can see the latest progress here: https://gamingedge.co

So what have we done in week 4?

Well, from the outside looking in, you won’t see very much (if any) change to the site or the Facebook page, that’s because we have set up the customer support portal, created an image for our Facebook ad using free image design software recommended by the Online Marketing Classroom course presenters.

In addition we have searched and identified the best suppliers for our product niche and created the sales channels to our store!

The store and Facebook pages are live now and our next steps is to start to drive traffic to the store.

Now all that might sound complicated if you’ve never built a store before, but I can assure you the Online Marketing Classroom coaching is excellent and very easy to follow.

Next week is week 5 of the 60 Day Challenge course, we are going to start to set up and run ads and learn how to process the sales and to scale up as the volume of sales increases.

8 Tests To Your Perfect Niche

8 Tests To Your Perfect Niche

Hello again,

Did you miss me? I missed you, that’s why I’m back in touch!

I left you hanging a bit last time, niche finding – remember?

As I said, yes, by all means, build your business around something you are passionate about, there’s a big advantage in building a business around your passion.

You already have a built in motivation to get up and at ‘em in the morning, because you love your subject matter.

perfect niche

Which is great, as I pointed out before, but how do you know if your passion is in a niche that has a demand ( we call it ‘a hungry crowd’)?

Well, here’s 8 tests you can do to research if your niche has sufficient demand to build a successful business.

1 – Is there enough other people as passionate about your subject (aka niche) as you are?

This is fairly easy to do, go to your favourite search engine and enter a few words and phrases (one at a time, obviously – lol), then filter using time and select ‘past year’ have a look at the search results and make a note of the number of search results come back for those words and phrases. You want millions of return search result volumes.

2 – Is there competition for your niche?

There’s a number of free keyword research tools that can tell you how much competition there is in a niche over a period of time.  Remember competition is good! You don’t want to have ‘High volumes of competition but any niche with medium competition means you have a good chance of making a viable business.

3 – Go deep!

Eh? WTF are you on about now? Go deep means to go more specialised in your niche, if you’re into video games, maybe go and research just PS4 games and products as a niche. If you like fishing, think about researching just sea fishing, fly fishing, I think you get the idea.

4 – Who’s talking about it?

You can check out forum search lists for the volumes and age of topics around your niche, the higher and more current the better.

5 – How many problems are there in your chosen niche and can you find better, unusual, new ways to help solve them?

8 steps to your perfect niche

6 – Can you make your own product (eventually) or will you only ever be able to sell other people’s products?

This is much more the case with physical products, but if you find a niche that has digital product opportunities, then there’s absolutely no reason why you can’t create and promote your own.

7 – Are you passionate about this niche (or sub-niche – remember going deep)?

It’s not enough to be interested in a niche if you want to be able to run a successful business in that niche, you have to be committed.

start a small business in the UK

8 – If you don’t know where to start – just start.

Take your passion, create a blog page, join forums, post and tweet about your subject, see what interaction there is, what kind of videos are available. Just this action alone will start to make you think more creatively about your possible profitable niche.

I hope you’ve found this of interest and that you’ll go forward in your search for a successful online business.

You can start here at Passive School.

How to find your niche that will keep you motivated?

how to find your niche

Which is great, if you have a passion for public speaking, or sales and marketing, or social media, or online gaming – all these ‘passions’ have a massive following – millions of people are interested in these subjects and if you have a great passion for them, you can find a niche within a niche for yourself.

If you’d like to skip reading and want to know how you can start, click here.  But if I were you, try to read along. 🙂

But what if you like something more quirky, maybe ‘trainspotting’ for example.

law of compounding

Now I am not for one minute knocking people who have a passion for the subject.

However, if you were thinking of starting a business with transporting as a niche, you would very likely go broke and lose a lot of time, energy and motivation.

You might be passionate to drive forward with your transporting business, but there is such a small market of interested people that it’s impossible to sell to them and create a sustainable long lasting business, even online.

So, I suggest you can follow your passion when researching your niche business, but make sure you do the right research before you decide to embark on that niche.

There are a few simple steps you can do to complete the research needed to see whether the niche has longevity.
