Don’t Be Busy Running Your Online Business Startup

You might be thinking that surely the first step to starting your own business is actually running it. Well, if you’re just new in the business, then that’s a given. You really will be running it. You’ll build a systematic way of doing things first. When you’ve built that routine, running your business becomes easier.

Yes, the first step to starting your own business is running it. But how about growing it?

Every business owner wants their business to grow. You can’t do that effectively, though, if you’re still too busy running your business. If that doesn’t make sense, consider this.

Look at your day job.

For most owners of online business startups, they do the business alongside a regular nine-to-five. From 5pm to, say, 9pm, they work on their business. They do both for the same goal – to earn money. Working from 9-5 earns them the bulk of their income, and working on the business after office hours earns them some extra income.

That is exactly why many people want to start businesses – to earn some extra money. But then, they’re working on both their job and their business, which is like having two jobs. The “business” sort of becomes a part time job.

That’s not how you grow a business.

Growing your online business startup requires strategic management. Soon enough, you’ll have to delegate most tasks to your employees; your role would be to guide them in the direction you want to steer your business.

Let’s say your small business idea is selling bespoke, custom-designed shirts. If you’re doing most of the selling and designing, you are still running the business. If you want to grow it, you have to let other people take care of that. What you should be doing is formulating marketing plans and campaigns to increase sales. Then just teach your employees what they should do to achieve your objectives.

Yes, the first step to starting your own business is actually running it yourself. But to grow your business, remember that you are the captain of your ship. Steer the ship in the direction you want it to be headed, and trust your crew to keep the ship on course.
